President Barack Obama has highlighted government-backed research on car-to-car communication.

Recently, the U.S. President experienced a simulator that demonstrated car-to-car communication technology, which U.S. regulators have called the next leap in driving safety. “As the father of a daughter who just turned 16, any new technology that makes driving safer is important to me,” said the President.

Currently, highway crashes and accidents kill over 30,000 people annually in the U.S. Automakers including Ford and Toyota are working on cars that will communicate with each other in hopes of making driving safer overall.

In addition, Obama has continued to keep up pressure to shore up the U.S. Highway Trust Fund and the administration said it would support a Republican proposal in the House to fund highway projects through May 2015. A long-term fix is still needed though and the administration is portraying transportation funding as critical to sustaining U.S. economic growth.

“Americans spend 5.5 billion hours stuck in traffic each year, which costs us $120 billion in wasted time and gas,” Obama said at the Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center in McLean, Va. “First-class infrastructure attracts first- class jobs,” he said.
