Volvo Car Corporation has joined the CAR 2 CAR Consortium, which consists of several other European automakers, to help build a common platform for vehicles to communicate within five years.
The goal of the consortium is to have vehicles share vital information with one another to help create a safer and more comfortable driving experience. The Swedish automaker has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with other members to implement a standardized technology for vehicle communication from 2016 and onward.
The idea is that the inter-car communication will function between all cars, regardless of make. By using a wireless network and existing systems such as GPS, communications between vehicles can take place on a separate frequency to make driving safer. Installation of transmitters in road signs and traffic lights will further extend the communication network.
There are several forms of new technology the automaker is involved with: Green Light Optimum Speed Advisory, Emergency Vehicle Warning, Road Works Warning, Slow Vehicle Warning, Traffic Jam Ahead Warning, Weather Information, In-Vehicle Signage, Emergency Electronic Brake Light, Motorcycle Approaching Indication, and Red Light Violation Warning.
All of these new technologies will make the roads a much safer place to drive, with vehicles and traffic lights able to warn one another of an impending accident – or better yet, avoid it altogether.
